June Wrap-Up // I “read” so much my ears fell off. // My eyes are boiling from this HEAT.

First of all, EXCUSE ME. HOW is the year HALFWAY OVER?? What is going on?

This is the time of year when I start to panic because I realize summer is halfway over and I have done nothing productive or exciting. So this section of my wrap-up is, unfortunately, quite boring.

  • I went camping.
  • I almost perished from the heat. It is OVER 100 degrees here and my car doesn’t have air conditioning and I am DYING.
  • I started a new job, and things have been a little more busy than usual while I adjust! Hopefully I’ll be able to start blogging more consistently as I get used to it.
  • I went camping again.

I read a lot of books. But here’s the (sad) thing. Most were audiobooks, because the job I have right now is such that I need to listen to SOMETHING while I work, and so of course I chose books. This is good because 1) I finish at least one book a day (I am also crazy and listen to them at 2x speed because that’s the only way to go.) and 2) I don’t lose my mind from the monotony.

I HATE audiobooks. This is mostly because 1) I’m a VERY visual person, and I need to SEE things in order to concentrate on them. So I have a hard time paying attention to/keeping track of what’s going on in the book when I’m listening to it vs reading it. 2) Sometimes the narrators aren’t…that great… and then my enjoyment of the book plummets because a narrator can really make or break a book, in my opinion. 3) I read about four times as fast as the narrator (twice as fast when the book is at 2x speed) so that’s frustrating! It’s annoying to take seven hours to listen to a book and enjoy it less than I would if I’d spent three or four hours and enjoying it WAY more. And 4) I just enjoy the book less when I listen to it! I have to concentrate more, I don’t always like the narrator, etc. It’s unfortunate.

But it’s better than nothing, and I’m lucky to be able to “read” at work, so I’ll take it!

I feel like my ratings weren’t very high this month, but I read so fast that the good ones really stood out, so I feel like I had a pretty good reading month!

bookish goals wrap up.png

  • Yell at all of you about my WIP, Dark as Gold and Bright as Shadow, to you, because I love to talk about it.
  • Edit my WIP, because it needs an entire new plot and no, I am not freaking out at all. Actually, I’m thrilled to *finally* edit a book! (Okay, I’m maybe freaking out just a little bit. But I’m excited, too.)
  • Make progress on my new WIP. I’m at 7k right now and it’s…not going well… but I’m in love with the idea!
  • Catch up on book reviews. (HAHAHA)
  • Put more effort towards Bookstagram.
  • Buy more books. (Please stop looking at me like that. I don’t buy books very often, but I WANT to.)
  • Blog-hop and comment more!
  • Occasionally write a Flashlight Friday post because THAT flopped.

How was your month? Did you read any good books? Any really bad books? Did you do anything exciting? Or anything super boring?

  1. First of all, your graphics are just too pretty and are giving me total graphics envy. Second of all, I totally feel all of your feelings about WIP’s. I’m at 45,000 words and am like 0.006 percent through the plot so that’s going to need some revamping. I’ve never tried an audiobook before, but I might have to give it a go if it means devouring a book a day. Lord only knows my TBR needs to dwindle so that might be the way to go 🙂

    1. Haha, thank you so much!!
It’s rough!! My problem is I have a hard time writing *enough.* My first draft for the WIP I’m about to edit is only 32k. I just really struggle in terms of plot xD.
You should!! Except if you can, get them from your library. They are super expensive otherwise!

  2. I’m sorry you didn’t have the best reading (or listening) month! I really hope July is gonna treat you better!

I kind of have similar problems with audiobooks too! When I tried my very first I saw that Lin-Manuel Miranda was narrating Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe so I went for it! When it comes to me listening to someone I always need to make sure I enjoy their voice and since I was familiar with Lin’s voice already, it was an easy decision! But then I found that I would only listen for about 20 minutes at a time (and the normal speed) and I just wouldn’t enjoy the book. But once I sped it up and listened for longer periods and was actually able to get into the story, it was much more enjoyable!

    1. Thanks!! I hope so too.

I haven’t heard of him! I’m glad you liked it. Yeah, it is weird how much someone’s voice affects our enjoyment of the book. I think speeding it up is really helpful because otherwise it’s sooo slooow.

  3. Congrats on the job and car, that’s so awesome!!! Having a car is the most freeing thing. ❤ And whoa man you read a HEAP. I tried audiobooks on the train to and from work and like you I can't concentrate on them. It didn't help that the first audio I ever listened to was American Gods, which was 19hrs long HAHA! Not for me. 😛
Also can't comprehend that we're half way through 2017. Can we just go back a bit so I can squeeze more books into the first half of the year, please.

    1. Haha, thanks!!
Yeah, I guess i do, but I’m always amazed at the people who can read upwards of 30 books a month. (e.g., paperfuury, pagewithaview, bookjunkee.) It’s crazy!!
I know?!? WHat’s with this?!? I have THINGS I need to do. This is not okay.
Also, it blows my mind that you guys just started winter and I’m over here cooking alive. I’m jeeeaalous xD.

      1. HOW THOUGH. I am happy if I get to 8, or 10 even! I average like, 4. BUT THIRTY?! Mental. Yah I am freezing my extremities off over here haha! At least you can go outside without wearing 27 layers. 😛

      2. I KNOWW. I don’t get it xD.
We’re pretty lucky and have a pretty mild winter. How hot does it get in your area? WHen I think of Australia I think of heat, but maybe I’m wrong.

        Liked by 1 person

      3. It gets hot and 80% humidity. I don’t know how much 40 degrees Celcius is… *to google* …it’s 104. Not a fun time unless you have air conditioning, and even then!!

  4. I hate audiobooks too, which is a little sad seeing as how I have 7+ that are unlistened to in my virtual library! Definitely going to have to try out your 2x technique on them. What’s odd about it, is the fact that I can and do, enjoy listening to super long podcasts – I suppose it’s because I listen to chatty ones, and if you miss something in them you don’t really miss anything at all. I hope you have a good reading month, next month!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, definitely try it!! I think it’s sooo much better that way. My problem is my Overdrive doesn’t have a huge selection of audiobooks, so I have the opposite problem.
Interesting!! I’ve never listened to a podcast. I’ll have to try one sometime!
      Thanks, you too!

      1. Podcasts are amazing! Comedic ones are definitely worth listening to, although there are so many different genres out there that it can be hard to choose a favourite one. They range from all different run times too!

  5. You went camping TOO OFTEN OMG. I missed you. srsly.
I read more good books than bad books. You know, I only read one bad book which was FRUSTRATING BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I WAS APPROVED ON NETGALLEY. ugh. I felt absolutely awful after that!
I don’t think I did anything exciting, but also I don’t think I did anything so boring that my eyes fell out of my skull?? It was, overall, a pretty middle-of-the-road month.

    1. I KNOW. It’s slightly ridiculous xD.
That’s good!! But yeah, that would be super frustrating!! Writing negative reviews is the WORST, especially when it’s the first one!!
That’s how my life is pretty much all of the time. It’s quite tragic. We should do something exCITING.

  6. Camping twice in the same month sounds fun, though I can’t imagine what that must have been like in the heat, lmao. I used to live in Pakistan before I moved to the US, and the temperatures would average over 115 during the summer – it was absolutely hell.

Sorry WDMR didn’t work out for you. I gave it 3 stars, though I might have given it 2 had it not been a diverse read – I definitely related a lot to the Indian culture, so I gave it one extra star. I hated Dimple and how she treated Rishi in the relationship, honestly. 😦

Good luck with your new job! ❤

    1. It is!! It actually wasn’t very hot in the specific area I camped in, so that was nice! That sounds TERRIBLE. I spent an afternoon in Las Vegas and it got up to almost 120 degrees and I almost died. I can’t imagine living in that heat year round!

I LOVED the Indian culture in WDMR, but I hated most of the characters and thought the plot was frustrating. I was super disappointed. Dimple’s behavior was frustrating for me too. I’m glad you liked it, though!

      Thank you!

  7. I totally can relate to all of the reasons to”hate” audiobooks! I’ve been trying to train my brain to stay focused while listening but it’s so difficult and a completely different experience from when I actually have the book in front of my eyes.

  8. Ooh good luck with the editing!! It can be super tough but also SO WORTH IT. 🎉🎉 Also I’m so glad you love All The Truth That’s In Me! I think it’s super underrated. I read it yeeears back but loved it so much I basically abandoned my family (we were holidaying at the time haha) and just read until it was finished. 😂 EMOTIONS.

    1. Thanks! I’m excited!!
I know, right?? I thought it was one of the best, most emotionally wrought books I’ve ever read. I don’t get why it’s not super popular. I also totally have a crush on Lukas, so that doesn’t help xD.

  9. I DIDN’T KNOW YOU HAD A WIP! Or maybe I did but I forgot. XD Anyways, WOW you read so many books! I wish I could be a fast reader like you. 😥 AND A LOT OF THE BOOKS YOU READ ARE ON MY TBR. #jelly And I looove Ink and Bone! Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on it. 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha, I haven’t really talked about it much.
Yeah, I’m pretty lucky! It has its downsides, though. Like everything you read kind of becomes a blur xD. But I guess then the good ones stand out, so that’s nice!
I am so excited to read it! I hope I like it :D.

  10. Congratulations on the job, I hope it’s going well! 🙂 You have read so many books this month, this is great – and you have Forest of a Thousand Lanterns on your physical TBR HOW this is so incredible, you’re so lucky. I hope you’ll enjoy it 😀

    1. Thank you!
I know, I’m unbelievably lucky to have gotten it!! I’m kind of nervous though – it’s one of my most anticipated releases, but the hype is huuuge and hype tends to disappoint me :'(. We’ll see!

    1. You can do it!! Try audiobooks! Then you can multitask.

Yeah xD. I get easily bored so I’ll probably change them again in a couple months, haha! They used to be dark pink/orange roses instead of watercolor flowers.

  11. Yay, congratulations on the new job, and I hope you had fun camping! I absolutely hate the heat and can’t wait until winter – I feel like everything is that much more fun (plus the bugs are gone, haha).

That’s a bummer to hear about you not liking Vengeance Road all that much!

  12. It’s nice to finally find someone else who cannot stand audio books either! Everyone is always like “give them another chance” but I REALLY can’t stand them. I’ve tried so hard. I can listen to the radio, podcasts, etc. but I just can’t get comfortable with audio books and I feel like it really diminishes how much I enjoy a book compared to reading it!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I know!! They’re so frustrating. I’ve never tried podcasts and I don’t really listen to the radio, but I wonder how I would feel about those. It’s interesting how the way we read affects our experience.

  13. Ahah I am HORRIBLE with audiobooks, granted, I tried it like once, but I much prefer reading the book, visually? But at the same time audiobooks sound SO convenient, like being able to essentially, read a book, at work is so amazing. You got through so many books! I’m sorry to hear When Dimple Met Rishi was a DNF for you, everyone has been raving about it and I was so excited to read it. Oh, also Forest of A Thousand Lanterns!! I am so jealous you have a copy in advance haha, I hope you enjoy it?!! ❤

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Definitely! I mean, they are convenient, but at the same time they are very frustrating for me.

I hope you like WDMR! I feel like most people do :D. I know, I’m so, so lucky! I almost screamed when I got it. I like it pretty well so far!

  14. I love love your graphics. And that’s cool that you went camping twice! You read so many awesome books last month, and I hope your July is filled with many more awesome books. Awesome post!

I’m new to blogging and book reviewing, and I was wondering if you had any tips for newbie bloggers and book reviewers.

If you have the time, please check out my blog @breenysbooks. I’d love any feedback. Have a wonderful day.
