May Wrap-Up // Book Haul

monthly wrapup

UPDATE: Sadly I was LIED to, (read: I misunderstood, which happens more often than I care to admit) and I will not have internet access for the next two weeks. πŸ˜₯ So no posts, and one invisible me. I’ll see you all in a while!!

Miraculously, this wrap-up is four days early instead of approximately four years late. (!!!)

But can someone please explain to me WHY IT IS ALREADY JUNE?? It seems like just yesterday we were gleefully celebrating the end of a (horrid) 2016 and now THE YEAR IS HALF OVER. UM WHAT.

Rant aside, this month was actually pretty fun!

School is over (finally), I went to France, two of my siblings had a birthday so I got cake TWICE, and I read a lot. I also started making more progress on my WIP, and the little “1 like = 1 fact” posts on Twitter got me excited about it again! I had been losing steam, so that was really great. Plus, one of my favorite things is talking about my WIP. (Yes, I am vain, I know.)

One of the best things EVER though was that I finished the first draft of my WIP!! I was super excited, because while I have drafted a book before, it was super sloppy and short and I hated it. This draft is still only 32K, and I still hate it, but it’s got more potential to grow and I’m excited to start revising and fleshing it out in a couple weeks. I’ll probably write a post about it soon, because like I said, talking about my WIP = Happiness.

(Here’s a teaser: There are lots of shadowy things in this book.)

It’s also getting super HOT here. It’s only May?? Why is it like 90*??

So I accidentally went a little crazy this month and ended up with an very large amount of new books. Miraculously, though, I only paid full price for two! The rest were either from library sales, publishers, or my local bookstore that SPOILS me with ARCs! (Seriously, though. It’s like Christmas every time I go.)

{Bought}

Yes, that is a French SoC. (Isn’t it gorgeous??)And yes, I definitely needed it.

THAT. IS A NEW. GAIL CARSON LEVINE. BOOK. (!!!) And that is The (Infamous) Black Witch. I figured it’d be wise to form my own opinion!

And of course I read a million e-books on Overdrive, which I swear is better than gold.

{This Month I Read:}

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo {3 Stars}

The Passion of Dolssa by Julie Berry {5 Stars, review coming soon!}

The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes {5 Stars, review coming soon!}

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo {Disappointing DNF}

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge {2 Stars, absolutely tragic DNF}

The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters {5 stars, review coming soon!}

The Crown’s Fate by Evelyn Skye {1.5 Stars}

Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic {2.5 Stars, review coming closer to release date.}

Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner {3 Stars}

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia {3.5 Stars}

The Dark Days Club by Allison Goodman {5 Stars, review coming soon!}

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Keri Maniscalo {2 Stars, review coming soon!}

I read some pretty amazing books this month! I also had four 5-Star reads, so that was great! Really, I only had a couple books I just didn’t like! The rest were very, very fun.

I also read so much that I am waaay behind on reviewing. It’s slightly ridiculous.

Also, I will be on a partial hiatus this upcoming week (meaning I’ll be posting but not as active online) and completely gone off the face of the earth the next. (Really I’ll just be camping in the woods without wifi, but shh. It’s basically the same thing.)Β  I’ll MIIISS you all!! ❀

  1. Sadly I didn’t read much this month 😦 But I am excited for June because it’s the end of school and my birthday is on the 1st!!

  2. Lenna, you are so cruel. You keep disappearing on me!! This is not nice, and I am going to rebel against you always leaving by BEING SAD *sobs*. I’m so glad you finished your first draft!! If we’re going to be completely honest, I have never wrote a “full” book. I’ve written countless short stories. I WANT to write a full book. I desperately want to, but I’m paralyzed by fear of even starting something. I don’t know how to outline (I’m one of those “I’m winging it” people). I have such a hard time with coming up with nuanced ideas. Blah, I am a mess.

    1. Overcoming that fear is suuuper hard. I know I haven’t done it!! I don’t outline. But you don’t have to, so if it doesn’t work for you, don’t do it! It’s hard though. Realizing that I can write super teeny tiny first drafts and it’s okay has helped me A TON. Maybe you could set a goal to write a mini novella? Also, trying to remember that a first draft cannot be compared to a published book (even though I do anyway :p) Aggh, it’s tough. I’ve honestly got nothing. But good luck!!

        Since you've been gone (which is now stuck in my head), I started a tiny little thing that I've written 500 words for which is not much but I'm glad to have written SOMETHING HOLY CRAP.

  3. Ooooh you only gave Ripper 2 stars?? That… does not bode well for me. We have similar taste! I was hoping to love it!! At least you’ve lowered my expectations… XD

    1. Oh yes, THAT ONE. There will be an annoyed review coming soon :p. Yeah, I was super disappointed. Maybe you’ll like it though!!

  4. Oh my goodness, that French Six of Crows!! GORGEOUS. I’m jealous.

    What were your thoughts on Siege and Storm? I read that series earlier this year and really enjoyed it, but I’ve heard from many other reviewers who didn’t like SaS or also DNFed the series!

    And congrats on your first draft! I have a WIP going too, but my progress on it has been very slooow.

    1. It iiiiis *insert heart eyes emojis*

      Well. It was disappointing. Honestly though, the only reason I liked Shadow and Bone was the Darkling (I adoooore him). I hated Mal and Alina, and I didn’t think the plot was that great. So after the Darkling wasn’t really involved in the first 30% of Siege and Storm, I decided I just didn’t care!! I also hated the love triangle. (And Mal. Mostly Mal :p)

      Thanks so much!! That’s so awesome!! And remember, it’s okay if it’s slow!
